“How long until I can speak Spanish?” is the first question almost every student asks us. The honest answer: it depends on consistency much more than on talent — and we can give you realistic milestones.
The CEFR milestones that matter
Spanish is measured on the CEFR scale (A1 → C2). For everyday life as a foreigner, the practical targets are:
- A1 (survival basics) — introductions, orders, numbers, getting around. For a beginner with daily classes: 2–4 weeks.
- A2 (everyday conversation) — shopping, small talk, simple directions, asking for help. With consistent classes: 2–3 months.
- B1 (independent) — holding real conversations, making plans, handling the bank and the doctor. Usually reached in 4–6 months of steady study.
- B2 (fluent-ish) — work situations, discussions, less mental translating. Most motivated students get there within a year.
What changes the speed
Three factors matter more than everything else:
- Daily contact with the language. Regular classes beat marathon weekends. A steady 2 hours per day, five days a week, beats an 8-hour binge once a week.
- Using it for real life. The flatmate, the market, the terere chat with neighbors — every real interaction counts double. Immersion where you live is the single biggest accelerator.
- A method you enjoy. Grammar tables alone are slow. Speaking from day one — even with mistakes — builds the automatic patterns much faster.
Why Paraguay is an accelerator
In Asunción you use Spanish every hour of the day: the bus, the pharmacy, the neighbors, the teacher, the terere circle. Spanish here is spoken clearly and slowly enough for learners, and Paraguayans are famously patient and encouraging with foreigners.
The honest summary
With a good school (2–4 h/day) you can be doing everyday conversations in 2–3 months and working-level Spanish in about a year. On your own with an app — give it two to three times longer.
The fastest learner we ever had? She came for four weeks of intensive classes, stayed for the semester. Start with a free level test and the school will tell you exactly which milestone is realistic for your plan.
